Greetings!

For week two of Making SPACE, we invite you to take a peek at a perennial favorite, the Barn. This unique multi-purpose space is built on creaky floorboards that lead over to an open stage, upright piano, and lofty ceilings. The cracks in the old red siding are charged with the plays, musicals, and novels that have coalesced here. The rafters invite creators and collaborators to dream a bit bigger. And at certain times of the year, artists might be surrounded by freshly harvested garlic and onions hanging up to cure. 2021 Creative Resident Ogemdi Akunna Ude describes this unique space beautifully below.

Ogemdi creates performances that focus on Black femme legacies and futures, grief, and memory. You might have recently seen Ogemdi on the cover of Dance Magazine's "2022 25 to Watch."

We fundamentally believe that artists deserve the time to create new works and to envision new, sustainable futures. SPACE’s mission remains: to create an environment singular in its ability to invigorate artists and innovators and their work.

ABOUT THE BARN
Originally built by Will Ryder in 1910, the barn is utilized by both artists and farmers, sometimes working side-by-side. With a wooden stage donated by our friends at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in 2013 and numerous chairs and tables, the barn offers a large open area for groups or individuals to work and play. Artists have used this space as a recording studio, rehearsal space for blocking or choreography, and staged readings.
